History of the Conlang Flag, from the Cleveland Public Library exhibit
Art leading up to the final flag design
The Conlang Flag was designed by Christian Thalmann, Jan van Steenbergen, Leland Paul, David J. Peterson and Adrian Morgan. It represents the Tower of Babel (translating Genesis 11:1-9 has been a tradition for conlangers) against a rising sun. It was released into the public domain. The versions above have been re-created at much higher quality by Paul Schleitwiler for the LCS, and are also released into the public domain. The icon files were created by Rebecca Bettencourt based on Paul’s SVG.
The LCS periodically sends in a bulk order to make the flag available at an affordable price (single orders can be $200+), and this page is used to keep track of how close we are to a new purchase. Once we’ve received enough orders to get a good price (at least 12 total), we’ll collect money from purchasers (preferably through PayPal) and place an order.
The price is very highly dependent on the number of flags ordered because most of the cost goes towards setup. In the past, it’s been around $20-$40 per flag + $8.50 US shipping (~or $12 for international shipping), ordering from TheFlagMakers.com.
If you’re interested in ordering a flag, bear in mind that this is a full size, all-weather flag: 3′x5′ knitted polyester, single side screenprint (1 ply), two sturdy hanging loops (called grommets) on the left side. Looks great from either side.
